Deirdre attended Christ the King from Kindergarten through 8th grade. She played a variety of sports and became the first female alter server. She went to Seattle Prep and then Loyola University Chicago on a full academic scholarship. At Loyola she majored in Biology and Secondary Education leaving with a certification to teach middle and high school science. After college, she returned to the Pacific Northwest to work for Salish Sea Expeditions as a marine science educator aboard a sailboat. From there, through a Jesuit connection, she took a position in Pohnpei, Micronesia as a marine scientist and teacher. After 2 years in Micronesia, Deirdre returned to Seattle and accepted a position at Lakeside Middle school where she developed a neuroscience based social and emotional development curriculum. She left teaching to pursue her Master’s in Education at Harvard and is now in a PhD program in Human Development at Penn State University. She is funded by a fellowship from the Department of Education and her research interests include promoting adolescent social and emotional development through curricular interventions that are informed by current neuroscience research.
