The Preschool and PreK programs at Christ the King School provide exemplary, developmentally appropriate early childhood programs for children ages 2 ½-5 years. The preschool teaching staff work collaboratively to create a learning environment that models best practices for high quality early education experiences for young children.
Our philosophy is based on active participatory learning in which children build knowledge and become kindergarten ready through natural play and interactions with the environment, events, and other people. Through teacher-led intentional activities, we ignite children’s interest in learning by creating an environment that encourages them to explore learning materials and interact with adults and peers. Our children are encouraged to explore, discover, investigate and create in our indoor and outdoor classrooms. To foster the growth and development of the whole child, staff carefully prepare the environment and plan lessons for daily intentional teaching. They create a predictable and active learning environment by arranging and equipping the classroom with diverse, open-ended materials that reflect children’s home and culture. The curriculum and materials are relevant, meaningful, current, and purposeful to encourage children’s social, emotional, physical and cognitive skills. We offer low child-to-adult ratios for optimal learning.
Our schedule is arranged for a balance of active and quiet play, teacher-guided and child-initiated activities. We set up our environment for play and learning by allowing children the freedom of movement and choice in our daily program by providing blocks of time for discovery. Our interest areas include dramatic play, construction, language & literacy, art, science, math, music & movement, and large gross and fine motor in both the indoor and outdoor classrooms.
The staff meets weekly to share reflective practices that inform our programs, curriculum, and environment to continue to meet the needs of our children and families.
Students at Christ the King consistently meet and exceed the current state standards which are based on the common core. We strive to provide a challenging core curriculum to our students so that they are more than prepared for a challenging high school experience.
