A place where we celebrate our Panther Passion for Reading!
The mission of the CKS library and information literacy program is to ensure that students are effective users of ideas and information, with skills and experiences to develop a life-long love of reading and learning.
Children are natural inventors. We all love to 'tinker', 'fix it', and create 'stuff'. We're so motivated to 'do it ourselves' that a movement has emerged from that impulse-- the Maker Movement. This movement encourages creating rather than just consuming, getting closer to the processes by which we meet our needs and wants, finding sustainable methods, and openly sharing ideas, expertise, tools and other resouces with other makers. The maker mindset, rooted in resourcefulness of inventors throughout history, encourages us to be creative, try, make mistakes, learn, and try again.
In recent years, more and more libaries are adding 'makerspace' opportunites for thier patrons. Makerspaces are a natural evolution for libraries. Libraries are doing what they do best- continuing to explore and reinvent the purpose of the library and what they offer to their users. Makerspaces promote inquiry, giving students opportunities to solve problems and find answers to questions.
As we explore using the CKS Library as a Makerspace, we are interested in hearing from parents and alumni who might be willing to share their talents in engineering, design, graphics, construction, science and related fields with our students in the library. Activities may take place after school, on weekends or evenings based on interest.
