Welcome to Music at At Christ the King, we believe that music education is an important part of our core curriculum. Fifth grade and middle school students have an opportunity to join our middle school choir. In addition to chorale, students will learn music theory and a variety of instruments to include drumming and bells.
The students get a chance to share their talents at both the Christmas and Spring concerts.
About the Teacher
Hello from your music teacher!
While I love all music, my first love is band. I’ve played clarinet and saxophone since I was in 5th grade, and flute since high school. I’ve been involved in many bands and drama productions over the years. I am currently in a group called the Lynnwood Community Band, a volunteer organization that promotes lifelong music for musicians of all ages! I currently play clarinet in the Concert Band, conduct the Jazz Band, and am a member of the Board of Directors. Outside of music I like to travel, visit family in Montana and Wisconsin, play basketball and soccer, watch various sports, watch local live performances, spend time outside, play D&D with friends, and crochet. I live in the Mill Creek area with my husband, two cats and a turtle.
Teaching Philosophy
For me, music is an integral part of everyone’s life. Whether you are a life-long performer or merely enjoying going to concerts, everyone experiences music in their own way! As adults, music is a way to expand our culture, reduces stress and anxiety, boost your mood, and give your brain a total workout. As students, music is has been shown to promote language development, literacy, math, science, memory skills, and attention spans! Plus, it’s just plain fun! My goal is to teach a genuine appreciation for music, even if most students don’t wind up pursuing music later. Music touches every aspect of our lives, everyone should know a little bit! To show their parents their hard work and learning during the year, students perform at Christmas time and in the spring.

Early Childhood Education and Kindergarten
ECE through Kindergarten is a great time to learn music! Students will begin to experience music through movement, games, music, singing, and instruments.
Elementary
1st through 5th graders learn music fundamentals. They are exposed to many music genres and styles, learn how to perform, and learn elements of rhythm, instrumentals, reading music, and playing as a group. In 3rd grade students learn recorder, 4th grade may begin band if they choose, and 5th grade may join choir if they choose. We continue to build on skills through each grade.
Middle School
6th graders continue learning vocal skills, performance skills, and other music skills. They prepare to sing a song for both the Christmas and Spring concerts every year. In the Fall they learn the format of songs and how to break them down. Then in the spring they will take the lessons they learned in the fall to begin working with a music writing program to create their own original songs, both individually and collaboratively. In 6th grade students also begin their participation in the Spring Musical, choosing between acting, set/props, and marketing. 6th graders also have the option to join both Middle School Band and Choir.
7th graders continue to learn vocal, performance, and instrument skills. They prepare to sing a song for both the Christmas and Spring concerts every year. In the fall we will review our song writing skills from last year and build on those skills. In the spring they will then take these skills and create parodies of popular songs in groups using music writing programs. In 7th grade students also begin their participation in the Spring Musical, choosing between acting, set/props, and marketing. 7th graders also have the option to join both Middle School Band and Choir.
8th graders continue to learn vocal, performance, and instrument skills, with a heavy focus on performance. They prepare to sing a song for both the Christmas and Spring concerts every year. As 8th graders, they are preparing to move on to high school, and they have several additional performances ranging from the Ritus ritual to a graduation song. In 8th grade students also begin their participation in the Spring Musical, choosing between acting, set/props, and marketing. 8th graders also have the option to join both Middle School Band and Choir.
